Packers GM Brian Gutekunst confirmed that Love tore ligaments in his left thumb and underwent a procedure. The good news? He’s expected to miss only about a week, maybe a bit more, and should be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Head coach Matt LaFleur added that Love will almost certainly sit out the preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks, a game he was originally slated to play in. The injury means the young QB will miss valuable practice time with the team’s equally young group of receivers and skill players — crucial reps for building chemistry before the season kicks off.

In Love’s absence, Malik Willis will take over first-team reps. While Willis’ preseason has been a mixed bag — with some interceptions but also flashes of solid play — this extra time could help him master the playbook and settle in. Still, as LaFleur put it, the Packers’ ideal scenario is having Love back under center for the opener.

When Love returns, the team might initially keep him in the shotgun formation to limit strain on his thumb before moving him back under center. LaFleur admitted he’s never dealt with this kind of injury before in his coaching career, so adjustments will be made as needed.
