Jason Momoa Shaved His Beard After 6 Years — And Here’s Why

A Bold Change for a Bold Actor

Jason Momoa shaved — and the internet can’t stop talking about it. The actor, known for his rugged look and iconic beard, recently took to Instagram to share a video of himself shaving his beard for the first time in six years. It’s a rare sight that caught fans off guard, and while some are still processing the clean-shaven look, there’s a deeper reason behind the transformation.

More Than Just a Makeover

In the Instagram video, Jason is seen running an electric razor through his famously thick beard, muttering “Damn it, I hate it” as the hair falls away. For many, it might seem like a celebrity makeover moment — but for Jason, it’s symbolic.

The last time Jason Momoa shaved his beard was in 2019, right before filming the first Dune movie, where he portrayed Duncan Idaho, a fan-favorite character. Now, years later, as he prepares to return to the role in Dune 3, the beard is once again gone.

But it’s not just about stepping back into character. The timing of this new shave aligns with another mission close to Jason’s heart: environmental change.

A Shave for Sustainability

Back in 2019, around the same time he went beardless for Dune, Momoa launched his sustainable water brand Mananalu. The company was one of the first to introduce reusable aluminum water bottles as a direct alternative to single-use plastic.

Now, as airports and hotels begin banning single-use plastics, Jason is doubling down on his mission. In his video, he reflects on how far things have come since he started the brand:

“Six years later, airports are banning single-use plastic… All these positive things are happening.”

With the launch of Mananalu’s closed-loop system in partnership with Boomerang, the goal is to eliminate waste, reduce carbon emissions, and help large facilities — like hotels in Hawaii — stop relying on imported plastic water bottles.

The beard shave, in this context, becomes more than cosmetic. It’s a symbolic reset — a new chapter for both the actor and the planet.

Dedicating the Shave to Dune’s Director

While shaving, Jason jokingly says, “Only for you, Den,” a shoutout to Denis Villeneuve, the visionary director of Dune. This playful nod suggests that returning to the sand-filled world of Arrakis might have played a role in the decision to lose the beard, especially since Duncan Idaho, his character, appeared clean-shaven in the earlier film.

Though he didn’t appear in Dune: Part Two, fans were thrilled to hear he’ll be returning for Dune 3, which is now in development.

Love It or Hate It? Fans React

In the video, Jason clearly expresses mixed feelings about the look, saying, “Damn it. I hate it” more than once. However, not everyone agrees with his self-critique.

His girlfriend, actress Adria Arjona, quickly jumped into the Instagram comments, posting three heart emojis, signaling her approval of the follicle-free style.

Online, fans have also weighed in. While some are mourning the loss of the signature Momoa beard, others are embracing the fresh look, especially knowing it’s tied to a larger purpose.

Final Thoughts: A Shave with Purpose

When Jason Momoa shaved, it wasn’t just to shock fans or change his image. It was part of a much larger statement — one rooted in sustainability, legacy, and transformation. Whether it’s through blockbuster films like Dune or bold moves in environmental advocacy, Jason continues to use his platform to spark real change.
